Long life 24V smart battery module for industrial applications
Murata has launched an all-in-one 24V standard smart battery module for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and robots.
The LIPY041WWPCSY6 is based around the FORTELION Li-ion iron phosphate battery chemistry acquired from Sony. This is a lthium ion battery with an olivine Li-ion phosphate ((lithium ferrophosphate) as the cathode material, which gives a longer cycle life with higher level of safety compared to traditional lithium ion batteries.
Lead acid batteries have been increasingly used in the industrial applicaiton such as AGVs and warehouse robots, but take a long time to charge and struggle with the lifetime. OPerators also want to reduce the amount of lead in the environment, hence the move to lithium iron phosphate cells. Lead acid batteries typically require replacement around 500 cycles and regular Li-ion batteries wear out after 2,000 to 3,000 cycles. The FORTELION technology is designed to last for at least 10,000 charge-discharge cycles.
The 24V battery module replaces two series-connected 12V lead-acid batteries as found in many service robots, AGVs, and electric forklifts. The FORTELION technology can be charged to 90 per cent of its full capacity within one hour and does not exhibit the memory effect observed in nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries caused by repeated partial discharge events. It is also less susceptible to voltage effects, so it can be used for long periods.
The smart battery module has an IP54 rating, delivering protection against dust and water, and also meets the UL2271 safety requirement for batteries for light electric vehicles, especially for outdoor use. Murata’s experience with PCs and mobile phones is combined with an arithmetic processing algorithm to accurately calculate the remaining battery capacity. This can be communicated to the wider system via the inbuilt CAN bus.
