The new LED-based lighting system has been developed and tailored by Toshiba for the needs of the museum. The system has been installed in the three pyramidions and the Colbert pavilion of the Louvre as part of a sweeping modernization. In the project, Toshiba contributed 3,200 LED lamps that will eventually completely replace 4,500 high energy xenon lamps. The remaining facades of the Napoleon Court will be completed in April 2012, and the courtyard will follow in 2013. When fully installed, the environmentally-friendly LEDs will cut the annual power consumption for exterior lighting by 73%, from 392,000 to 105,000 watt-hour. Also the maintenance efforts will be reduced.
The first part of the new system which includes 350 LEDs has been put into operation on December 6 in a ceremony with the participation of Mr. Norio Sasaki, the President of Toshiba Corporation, and Mr. Henri Loyrette, the Director of the Louvre Museum.
