With dimensions of 1.1 mm x 1.0 mm, the new TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) device meets the automotive industry’s demand for highly miniaturised and powerful protection devices for automotive electronic control units (ECUs), including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving controllers and automotive gateways. Designers can save at least 75% of the space required by conventional TVS solutions in SOT23-3L and SOT323-3L packages with the new device, says ST.

The ESDCAN03-2BM3Y vouches for protection against voltage spikes, with clamping voltages as low as 33 V (8/20 µs at 1A) and 37 V (transmission line pulse, TLP) at 16 A. The device, which also passes the jump-start and reverse polarity tests according to ISO 16750-2, also proves to be extremely robust, withstanding ESD contact discharges of up to 15 kV (ISO 10605). With its suitability for current pulses of up to 3.3 A, it can withstand strong current surges.

Apart from CAN and CAN-FD, the TVS component can also be used for the protection of buses with high data rates, such as FlexRay or USB, thanks to its line capacitance of only 3.3 pF. Last but not least, the low capacitance simplifies PCB design because additional leeway is provided for the layout of tracks.

Thanks to the maximum junction temperature of 175 °C, it can be used anywhere in the vehicle – from the passenger compartment to the engine compartment with sometimes demanding application profiles. Due to the extremely low leakage current of 50 nA at 24 V, the ESDCAN03-2BM3Y also minimises current drain from the battery when the vehicle is switched off, thus helping to maintain the state of charge and maximise the range of electric vehicles.

The ESDCAN03-2BM3Y TVS device is already in production. Its wettable-flank DFN1110 package facilitates high-throughput optical inspection after soldering to meet stringent quality assurance specifications.
