Low- to mid-power motor drivers combine simplicity and flexibility
The STSPIN830 is designed for controlling brushless 3-phase motors and has a pin for setting the operating mode, with which the three half bridges of the integrated power stage can be controlled directly with pulse-width modulated input signals U, V and W. Optionally, the signals can be applied directly to the individual gates. A separate sense connection for each inverter branch makes it easier to set up three-shunt or single-shunt detection for vector control (Field-Oriented Control – FOC).
The STSPIN840 can drive two brushed DC motors or drive a larger motor using ST’s familiar parallel connection concept. The full-bridge integrated circuits can therefore be configured either as two separate bridges or as one bridge, in which case the two MOSFET groups are connected in parallel to reduce the RDS(on) and increase the current carrying capacity.
Both drivers feature a wide range of features, including PWM current control circuits with adjustable switch-off time and a useful standby pin to reduce power consumption. Also available are various protection circuits such as non-dissipative overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, low-voltage blocking (UVLO), overheating protection and a locking function that helps to implement robust, reliable drives.
The integrated power stages of both devices contain ST-proprietary MOSFETs with a low RDS(on) value of only 500 mOhm, which combines high efficiency with economy. The STSPIN840 offers the possibility to use the output bridges either individually or in parallel; this helps to reduce the component expenditure in applications with several motors.
Thanks to their high degree of integration and flexibility, the new drivers enable the realization of more compact, cost-effective control circuits for applications in industry, robotics, medical technology, building automation and office equipment. The STSPIN830 is predestined for factory automation endpoints, household appliances, small pumps and fans for computers or general cooling purposes. The STSPIN840, on the other hand, targets ATMs and other money handling machines, multiaxis stage lighting systems, thermal printers, textile and sewing machines and vending machines.
To simplify product evaluation and prototype construction, two STM32 Nucleo Expansion Boards are also offered. Besides the X-NUCLEO-IHM16M1 for the STSPIN830 there is the X-NUCLEO-IHM15A1 for the STSPIN840.
