
Lumotive offers optical beam-steering metasurface

Lumotive LLC (Redmond, Washington) has said its LM10 digital optical beam-steering chip based on liquid crystal metasurface technology is now available.
The company claims that this is the world’s first digital beam steering solution and that it will improve 3D sensing for industrial robotics, smart infrastructure and automotive applications.
The LM10 is designed for mid- and short-range use such as object tracking and autonomous navigation. The LM10 is available and ready for large-scale production. Lumotive also offers the M30 reference design, a lidar sensor built around the LM10.
The LM10 offers:
- a 160-degree FOV in the steering axis
- 10mm by 9mm active aperture area that fits many system designs
- solid-state, zero-inertia beam steering
- software-definable, non-sequential dynamic scanning
- compatibility with all laser types, including VCSEL and EEL
“After 8 years of rigorous R&D, we are thrilled to bring the first ever solid-state optical beam steering product to market,” said Gleb Akselrod, founder and CTO of Lumotive, in a statement. “LCM technology, which uses the revolutionary physics of dynamic metasurfaces to actively steer light without any moving parts, is enabling never before seen capabilities in 3D sensing and many other applications where software-controlled optical beamforming is critical.”
