The smart glasses – called the Magic Leap One Creator Edition – are see-through goggles that integrate computer graphics into the real world. The mixed-reality system comprises the glasses themselves, a “Lightpack” computing pack designed to be worn on a belt, and a remote controller.

The company lists six key features of its platform, including “digital lightfield, visual perception, persistent objects, soundfield audio, high-powered chipset, and next-generation interface.” Its lightfield photonics, says the company, “generate digital light at different depths and blend seamlessly with natural light to produce lifelike digital objects that coexist in the real world.”

The headset itself features a variety of built-in sensors, including six cameras. According to the company, the system will respond to a variety of input modes, including head position, eye tracking, voice, and user gestures.

Use cases for the system are listed as including web browsing and shopping, opening up multiple virtual monitors, and telepresence, as well as all sorts of entertainment and gaming applications.

Specifics concerning the Lightpack wearable computer are not currently available, but its computing power is said to be close to that of a MacBook Pro or Alienware gaming PC. Reports are that it has discrete graphics.

The Magic Leap One glasses are set to ship sometime in 2018, says the company, and a software development kit (SDK) is planned for early 2018. Pricing has not yet been announced, but expectations based on previous comments by the company are that it may be in the range of $1,000 to $1,500.
