Magna, Lyft successfully conclude level-5 tests on public roads
The two companies have established a joint R&D team with about 300 engineers which develops scalable software and hardware components for automated driving. In the first year, the partners achieved some important successes. Test drives at the highest autonomy level 5 (no steering wheel, vehicle drives completely on the basis of its own calculations) were completed. These tests took place on public roads, using an autonomous (Level 5) pilot shuttle for Lyft employees on the route between Palo Alto and a Caltrain station in Northern California.
The real-time mapping scenarios and data used during this first pilot project provided the team with valuable insights to prepare the technology for more comprehensive testing situations, said Swamy Kotagiri, Magna’s Chief Technology Officer.
The two companies also want to share the results they have obtained together. In addition, they will use otherwise collected data from Lyft to improve existing systems. Magna receives the right to use the technologies developed on this basis in a variety of applications in other areas of new mobility systems.
