The DS28E38 features a new security system that uses an Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) public key authenticator to prevent invasive discovery. The system is part of Maxim’s ChipDNA physically unclonable function (PUF) technology.

The DS28E38 is the first authenticator to use Maxim’s ChipDNA technology to protect data. ChipDNA PUF works by modifying the chip’s characteristics when it is probed. This prevents the attacker discovering the unique value used by the chip’s cryptographic functions.

Alongside the ChipDNA PUF functionality, the DS28E38 also provides a set of cryptographic tools, including an asymmetric hardware engine, a FIPS/NIST-compliant true random number generator, 2 Kbits of secured EEPROM, and a decrement-only counter. The DS28E38 allows developers to add an extra level of security to applications where data security is critical.
