Recognised earlier this year as one of the industry’s first development boards to fully support mbed, the FRDM-K64F board enables end-to-end mbed systems and works with a full complement of mbed technologies including the mbed OS, mbed Client, the mbed Device Connector service and associated mbed tools.

Freescale’s support for the new mbed OS reinforces its proven track record of collaboration with ARM on mbed enablement, which includes the FRDM-K64F board serving as the processing platform for two of the first “IoT end device-to-cloud” systems for mbed – the ARM mbed IoT Starter Kit for IBM® IoT Foundation and ARM mbed for the Microsoft Azure IoT Suite.

Freescale also recently delivered its advanced FNET TCP/IP software stack to the mbed ecosystem. This software will become the foundation of the mbed TCP/IP stack and serve as the connectivity heart of the ARM mbed OS architecture.

The Freescale Freedom FRDM-CR20A development board for the MCR20A 2.4 GHz wireless transceiver connects with the mbed Enabled™ Freescale FRDM-K64F, forming an mbed supported system. The FRDM-CR20A board provides a low-power 802.15.4 radio, and when combined with the FRDM-K64F board, creates the basis for a fully functional, wireless, cloud-connected IoT platform, further enabling new technologies including Thread low-power mesh wireless networks.

“ARM mbed IoT Device Platform fills a critical gap by providing a comprehensive, standards-based platform for microcontrollers,” said Geoff Lees, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale’s MCU Group.

“Freescale’s FRDM-K64F has been a valuable test platform during the internal development prototyping and validating of mbed OS with the other mbed IoT Device Platform capabilities,” said Zach Shelby, vice president of marketing, IoT business, ARM.
