MediaTek adds AI core to phone processor
The chip inludes an octa-core CPU made of four Cortex-A73s and four Cortex-A53s, a Mali-G72 graphics processing unit and it is fabricated in TSMC’s 12nm FinFET process technology.
NeuroPilot software works heterogeneously across CPU, GPU and the AI processing unit (APU). The APU is said to be twice as is power efficient as a GPU and 280GMAC/s.
NeuroPilot applications can be developed using frameworks such as TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe and Caffe2 or other 3rd party frameworks, and at the API level standard Google Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI), while the NeuroPilot SDK extensions allow developers and device makers to bring their code closer-to-metal for better performance and power-efficiency.
The NeuroPilot software environment can be used for such tasks as face recognition and other forms of smart imaging and video. MediaTek did not provide more information about the AI processing accelerator within the P60.
According to a report a number of Chinese companies including Tencent Holdings Ltd., SenseTime, Megvil Technology Ltd. and Silicon Valley-based ArcSoft Inc. are designing products and services based on the Helio P60 processor.
