Philips (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), which used to make its own consumer chips before floating off the division as NXP Semiconductors NV, has adopted chips from MediaTek (Hsinchu, Taiwan) for energy-efficient LED-backlit TVs. NXP, which had been a major supplier of television chips to Philips, sold its television chip interests to Trident Microsystems (Santa Clara, CA) in 2009.

"Energy efficiency has already become one of the major considerations in recent years when choosing between digital consumer products," said Joe Chen, general manager of the digital TV business unit at MediaTek, in a statement.

MediaTek said it expects to benefit from the integration of its recent acquisition of Ralink Technology Corp. Meanwhile all has not gone smoothly at Trident with the company making a loss and losing key executives in the second quarter.
