
MediaTek to demo Wi-Fi 7 chips at Computex
MediaTek Inc. (Hsinchu, Taiwan) has developed two chips – Filogic 880 and Filogic 380 – that implement the upcoming Wi-Fi 7 standard.
Wi-Fi 7 is still in development as the implementation of IEEE.802.11be for extremely high throughput, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance industry body. But it is expected to achieve data rates of 36Gbits per second, longer range and reduced data traffic congestion.
Wi-Fi 7 is expected to become the backbone of home, office and industrial networks providing connectivity for everything from multi-player AR/VR applications to cloud gaming and 4K calls to 8K streaming and beyond.
The Filogic 880 combines a Wi-Fi 7 access point with a host processor to provide a router and gateway solution for operator, retail and enterprise markets. The host processor includes a quad-core Arm Cortex-A73 application processor and a neural processor unit. It can support up to penta-band 4×4 mimo with a maximum speed of 36Gbps.
The Filogic 380 is a single-chip Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 combo. It has dual concurrent 2×2 capability and is designed to bring Wi-Fi 7 connectivity to client devices, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, notebooks, set-top boxes and OTT streaming devices.
Both chips are made in a 6nm manufacturing process.
MediaTek will be demonstrating the chips at Computex 2022, which will be held from May 24 to May 27 in Taipei, Taiwan.
