Belgian sensor specialist Melexis is working with a Chinese semiconductor foundry to provide end-to-end chip production in the region. This will help to mitigate any impact form the trade war between the US and China, where China is imposing import tariffs depending on where a device is fabricated.

The Chinese fab at an unnamed partner will produce parts tailored to the Chinese market with production starting in the first half of 2026. Last year Melexis signed a partnership to outsource semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) locally in China.

The growth of China’s automotive, consumer, industrial, and robotics industries has made the region a key focus for Melexis. In 2024, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) area accounted for 60% of  total sales at the company, with Greater China contributing nearly half of that. Melexis has secured design wins in China in automotive powertrain, interior lighting, steering and braking systems.

A new office in Shanghai is providing a core hub for sales, marketing, brand presence, technical support, and engineering activities.

“We continue and expand our strategic roadmap in China. Melexis has grown its activities in China for more than 20 years, and in 2024, we concluded an agreement for end-to-end local manufacturing,” said Dieter Verstreken, VP of China Strategy at Melexis. “This exciting next step will see new products coming from our Chinese wafer manufacturer from early 2026, helping to improve lead times. This is especially critical in this fast-growing market, and our existing customers have already responded favourably.”
