The original deal was made with SoftKinetic SA (Brussels, Belgium), which is set to be acquired by Sony (see Sony acquires SoftKinetic for ranging technology).

Melexis has been licensed to use SoftKinetic’s DepthSense technology for a number of years in such products as the MLX75023 quarter-VGA automotive ranging sensor.

Melexis said it will enter into a license agreement with Sony for the DepthSense sensor technology upon Sony’s acquisition of SoftKinetic, and will collaborate with Sony to further expand this technology. Sony will manufacture the products derived from the collaboration.

"This innovative technology could change dramatically the way drivers communicate with their vehicles. No more touch screens or knobs, but a simple gesture might suffice in the future," said Francoise Chombar, CEO Melexis, in a statement.
