Melexis shows time-of-flight crash sensor
SoftKinetic is offering DepthSense as a gesture-recognition platform similar to the Microsoft Kinect for consumer electronics and professional applications. The optically-based DepthSense has been developed in collaboration between SoftKinetic and Melexis (Ieper, Belgium).
For consumer applications the 160 by 120 pixel sensor is tuned to see infra red light emitted by the camera. The sensor transforms the time-of-flight positional data into a 3D image, including a grey-scale confidence map, accessible via USB for software analysis. The operating range is up to 1 to 4 meters with a resolution of less than 2 centimeters, according to SoftKinetic.
To demonstrate automotive applications Melexis has developed a 3-D ranging camera evaluation kit. The EVK75301 evaluation kit contains: a camera module containing a 80 by 60 pixel MLX75301 time-of-flight sensor in a metal housing and a C-type lens mount to allow the use of different lens systems and optics; two illumination units including the light sources (NIR LEDs) and their driving circuits; software and drivers for Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux.
