Memory compression IP startup raises €2.5 million
The sum of €2.5 million (about US$2.9 million) has come from Nordic VC Industrifon and present shareholders. The capital will be used to expand the company’s international presence and take several products to market.
ZeroPoint Technologies now provides a real-time memory compression IP block for use in System-on-Chips (SoCs) called Ziptillion. The company states that Ziptillion can effectively double a computer’s main memory capacity and memory bandwidth.
Ziptilion is designed to enhance SoC processor subsystems, such as servers, smart mobiles, and embedded systems. Ziptilion’s hardware IP block compresses main memory in real-time by a factor of two to four. The solution doubles memory capacity and memory bandwidth, resulting in significantly faster systems, more performance per watt, and lower energy use.
Initially the company says it wants to expand its engineering team in Sweden and its customer base in North America and Asia-Pacific.
“ZeroPoint Technologies’ ambition is to become the de facto standard for main memory compression in high performance SoC processor subsystems, and this funding gives us muscles to make it happen,” said ZeroPoint Technologies CEO Klas Moreau.
Thanks to the compression/decompression accelerators and that data is compressed when fetched from memory, the memory access latency is often shorter with Ziptilion than without.
