Starting from a market of $785 million in 2013, the market research firm forecasts a 13 percent compound annual growth rate of 13 percent to take the annual market size to $1.65 billion by 2019. Annual unit shipments will move from 2.4 billion in to 6.6 billion over the same period.
The main driver of the MEMS microphone market so far has been adoption in smartphones but emerging applications will continue to boost the MEMS microphone market, said Frederic Breussin, manager of MEMS and sensor business unit at Yole Developpement.
Smartphone sales continue to expand and each uses more than one MEMS microphone. Some smartphones are now using three microphones: one for voice capture, one or two for noise cancellation and one for voice recognition improvement.
But on top of this will come markets for the Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable electronics such as smart watches, smart glasses, smart homes and buildings, and voice control in the vehicle.
"We believes that the MEMS microphone will remain one of the fastest growing MEMS components due to existing and new opportunities," said Yole analyst, Wenbin Ding.
