By Peter Clarke

With deployment in smart speakers, TWS (true wireless stereo) earbuds, and audio headsets, the audio electronic component industry is set to grow from a value of $15.3 billion in 2020 to reach $21.4 billion in 2026, representing a compound annual growth rate of 5.8 percent over the period.

The bulk of the market is made up of microspeaker components with a $9 billion market size in 2020 but one that is only set to enjoy modest growth through to 2026

Within that grouping the strongest growing sector will be signal processing logic for ear-buds, headsets and smart speakers, audio processing units (APUs) and SoCs. At a 2020 market value of $1.8 billion these represent about 12 percent of the overall audio components market. They are due to experience a CAGR of 13.3 percent over the period to 2026.

Cirrus Logic, a long-time supplier to Apple, held 48 percent of the market in 2020 followed by Qualcomm with 18 percent and NXP with 12 percent.

The MEMS microphone market is also set for strong growth. Valued at $1.4 billion in 2020 the market is set to enjoy a CAGR of 10.5 percent, taking the market up to a value of $2.5 billion in 2026.

Goermicro, a 2017 spin-off from Goertek, took the lead in this market by overtaking Knowles in 2020 with 33 percent market share. Knowles had 32 percent share followed by AAC on 12 percent. Infineon Technologies AG has traditionally supplied MEMS microphone die to microphone assemblers such as Goertek and AAC Technologies.

Although Infineon began to supply complete MEM microphones it has yet to gain any significant market share.
