Standing Egg Co. Ltd. (Seoul, Korea) was founded in May 2013 and develops MEMS sensor products including accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors, and others. With its planned MIPS-based sensor hub chips, modules and boards, Standing Egg will provide a means to integrate and process data from these different sensors.

Standing Egg’s decision to license the MIPS M5100 was based on an assessment of performance, power consumption and die area, according to Imagination.

"Standing Egg’s sensors are designed and built by us so we control every element from concept to packaging. When it came to selecting a CPU, we chose MIPS for its outstanding performance efficiency and features," said Jongsung Lee, CEO of Standing Egg, in a statement distributed by Imagination. "Its ability to handle sophisticated algorithms as well as its signal processing capability make the MIPS M5100 ideal for our next-generation sensor hubs, and we already have interest in these products from several customers. Imagination’s full line of IP, including connectivity IP and cloud services, is quite appealing for sensor hub applications."

Jim Nicholas, vice president of MIPS business at Imagination Technologies said that customers are looking for features such as hardware virtualization, enhanced security and hardware multi-threading that can be provided by the MIPS architecture.

Standing Egg plans to release sensor hub products based on MIPS M5100 CPU in the second half of 2015, with an FPGA development version available in advance.

Next: MEMS sensors and K-indie connection

Standing Egg has a tri-axis accelerometer the SGA100 due out in June and a follow on product the SGA200 in development. The company also plans to introduce gyroscope, magnetometer, pressure, temperature and humidity sensors and, presumably, combinations of them in single packages along with an MCU to create a sensor measurement component.

Standing Egg is also the name of a K-indie South Korean musical group.
