For the first 90 days, Designer Schematic and Designer Layout will be available at a 30-percent discount, starting at $199 and $449, respectively, after a 15-day evaluation period, free of charge. The product licenses are sold as an annual subscription, exclusively from Digi-Key.

The tools address the escalating demand from professional engineers for affordable design software linked to Digi-Key’s vast inventory of over four million electronic components. Designer Schematic and Designer Layout come with free access to Mentor Graphics’ PartQuest, a fully integrated website that merges Digi-Key part numbers into symbols and footprints, reducing manual errors and saving time and cost.

With these innovative tools, design engineers can easily complete an entire circuit and printed circuit board design themselves or leverage third party PCB layout houses.

“All competing free tools available on the market have limitations, and small companies cannot base their business on a free tool for which they have no guaranteed follow-up”, explained Randall Restle, Director, Applications Engineering for Digi-Key. “You get what you pay for, and with Mentor behind, startup companies for example can design all their products on such a tool, then come back to their designs a couple of years later and find compatible updated tool versions.”

For Mentor Graphics, these low-cost tools are another entry point to future upgrades, leading to possible up-conversions, the company will also benefit from Digikey’s popularity and visibility as an online distributor. This joint development very much echoes Mouser’s and National Instrument deal (see MultiSIM comes free in Mouser’s blue).
