microLED chips in volume production at PlayNitride
PlayNitride has raised US$50 million for microLED production and will recruit 100 new staff employees, company chairman and CEO Charles Li said to Digitimes.
PlayNitride has reached a yield rate of at least 99.9% for microLED mass transfer and claims the typical industry 99.999% yield requirement is unnecessary because it can cover the difference using mass repair, increasing mass transfer speed. The CEO reportedly said that his company has reached a mass transfer speed of 10,000 chips per second.
The microLED chips could be used in large-size TVs, smart wearable devices’ screens and automotive displays. PlayNitride has cooperated with PMOLED panel maker RiTdisplay to develop color microLED displays for use in smart wearable devices, with production expected to begin in second-half 2019. The company is also in strategic cooperation with China-based Tianma Micro-electronics to use its LTPS TFT-LCD panels as substrates onto which it could design microLED based transparent automotive displays.
