MikroE welcomes back IrDA with Click board
In a blast from the past, MikroElektronika (MikroE) has expanded its range of Click boards with support for the IrDA infrared wireless communications protocol.
The IrDA 4 Click is a compact add-on board that provides a cost-effective solution for sending and receiving IR serial data. This board features the TFBS4650, an infrared transceiver from Vishay Semiconductors, which includes a PIN photodiode, an infrared emitter, and a low-power integral circuit and complies with the IrDA physical layer specification.
The IrDA 4 Click board also includes an infrared encoder/decoder, the MCP2120 from Microchip, that sends and receives IR serial data between the infrared transceiver module and the host MCU. The transceiver supports data rates up to 115kbit/s per the IrDA standard at a 1m distance. The MCP2120 encodes an asynchronous serial data stream, converting each data bit to the corresponding Infrared (IR) formatted pulse, with received IR pulses decoded back into the corresponding UART formatted serial data.
IrDA was first introduced in 1994 for consumer equipment but has since been used in areas such as power systems where a light-based system is safer or RF is problematic.
Click boards follow a modular prototyping add-on board standard invented by MIKROE to speed up the way users add new functionalities to development boards. Click boards enable design engineers to change peripherals easily, cutting months off development time.
The mikroBUS socket standard enables any Click board to be instantly connected to the microcontroller or microprocessor on a main board. Many leading microcontroller companies including Microchip, NXP, Infineon, Dialog, STM, Analog Devices, Renesas and Toshiba now include the mikroBUS socket on their development boards.
