The two partners have demonstrated the technology with a drone transmitting its raw video footage in real time for rapid and accurate analyses in surveillance applications.

Tokyo Tech has been working on millimeter wave wireless communication systems including the 5G-MiEdge. Millimeter wave wireless communication is expected to be used in 5G because of the high-speed communication, but this frequency band suffers from a large attenuation.

SECOM and Tokyo Tech have been conducting joint research since 2018 under the framework of the SOFTech Consortium. The two partners developed their long-distance millimeter-wave wireless communication device using a lens antenna developed by Intel, which they miniaturized to save on weight and make it drone-compatible. In their tests, the team was able to transmit uncompressed 4K video over 100m in the air to an access point on the ground.
