MinebeaMitsumi buys MEMS fab from Omron
The acquisition is taking place through the Mitsumi Electric Co. Ltd. subsidiary. The purchase price was not provided but MinebeaMitsumi said it intends to invest more than 10 billion yen (about US$90 million) to build up manufacturing production capacity to 20,000 wafer starts per month.
MinebeaMitsui said the goal was to support its Mitsumi-Abric semiconductor subsidiary in its goal of reaching annual sales of 100 billion yen (about $180 million) within a few years and of double that within 10 years.
MinebeaMitsui supplies ICs, timer ICs, MEMS sensors, magnetic sensors, in-vehicle memories, IGBT power devices for consumer products, in-vehicle use, medical use, etc. It provides a lithium-ion battery protection IC used for 80 percent of the world’s smartphones.
Minebea said it already has two front-end and back-end factories in Japan and overseas and the objective of acquiring a 200mm wafer fab was to solve production capacity shortage problems in such areas as IGBT power devices.
The company said it would continue to make MEMS pressure and other MEMS sensors.
The deal is expected to complete on October 1, 2021.
MinebeaMitsumi is a manufacturer of mechanical and electronic parts such as bearings, motors, sensors, and semiconductors. It’s revenue in the 2020 financial year was about $9 billion.
