MIPI forms sensors working group
Ken Foust, a sensor technologist at Intel, has been appointed chair of the sensor working group and Satwant Singh, director of strategic planning with Lattice Semiconductor is the Vice Chair.
The development follows on from the work of an open "Birds of a Feather" (BoF) group that started in 2012. The BoF has reviewed the state of the industry with regard to sensors in mobile equipment and surveyed the opportunities for establishing a standard sensor interface. Upon further investigation into the requirements related to integrating sensors into mobile systems, and a review of technical proposals against these requirements, the MIPI board of directors has approved the creation of the Sensor Working Group.
Sensors are experiencing rapid growth in mobile devices and the number of sensors per item of equipment is at more than 10 but the interface landscape is fragmented, said MIPI. MIPI said the working group will address the digital interface landscape, the rapidly expanding number of sensors per device, the varied signals per device and non-scalable architectures.
"A new interface standard which addresses improved efficiencies will benefit the industry. This will enable greater proliferation of sensors, which will drive growth of MEMS across many markets," said Tony Massimini, chief of technology at Semico Research, in a statement issued by MIPI.
The MIPI Alliance has more than a dozen working groups which span the mobile device design.
