Ingenic’s JZ4770 SoC is one of the first MIPS-based SoCs targeting mobile devices that delivers 1GHz frequency, increasingly a requirement for tablets and other devices that incorporate rich multimedia and numerous high-performance applications and functionality.
The JZ4770 is the latest in a series of low-power platforms from Ingenic to use the MIPS32 architecture for mobile products. It integrates a 1GHz CPU, 1080P VPU, OpenGL ES 2.0 3D GPU and numerous on-chip analog and application blocks such as audio CODEC and GPS.
The MIPS32 compatible XBurst CPU core provides an alternative and ultra low-power application processor solution. At 1GHz, the JZ4770 SoC is said to consume around 250mW.
A new SoC from Actions Semiconductor, one of China’s leading fabless companies, uses a superscalar MIPS32 74Kf core (with floating point unit) running at 1.3GHz. In addition to running Android, the new chip incorporates an OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics processing unit, USB 2.0 OTG, HDMI 1.3, and support for multi-format high definition 1080p video encoding and decoding.
Actions and MIPS say they will also work together to enable the platform with Adobe Flash Player 10.2 optimised for the MIPS architecture. The 1.3GHz chip is specifically designed for tablets, and MIPS expects Actions to become a flag bearer for the MIPS architecture in the mobile market.
This is one of the first times a MIPS licensee has achieved such high frequency with a MIPS-based SoC targeted for mobile applications, and MIPS stated it is working closely with licensees such as Actions to deliver fully optimised MIPS-based solutions for specific target applications. Actions has more than 10 years experience in the market with SoCs for portable consumer electronics. Its MIPS-based chips already ship in portable media player products including its Series 23, 25, 27, game family G1000, tablet family ATM70, and a feature phone, but this is its first chip specifically designed for tablets.
Also, a new highly-integrated internet TV platform from SiS has been announced, which uses dual core high-performance MIPS processors and offers customised widgets and support for services including YouTube, Facebook, eBay, Flickr, weather and finance, as well as online film rental. It supports high-end graphics and enhanced video processing as well as Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for Flash and video streaming on TV. It also supports video on demand recording and Skype for internet communications. SiS says it has been designed for seamless interoperability with other Android devices such as tablets and smartphones, which can be used for remote control and video sharing. The new internet TV platform is available now through SiS.
