MIPS has announced it has gained official source access to Android 3.0, also known as Honeycomb. It is now porting the latest version of the popular operating system to the MIPS architecture. The company has an established eco-system of partners working with Android on its core architecture, predominantly comprising companies focuses on digital media.

The MIPS architecture has an established user-base within the digital media domain and the increased trends towards connected TVs is likely to provide increased demand for the MIPS/Android combination, as it is likely to provide a logical extension to Google’s move towards the connected TV.

Art Swift, vice president of marketing and business development with MIPS, commented: “We have already seen MIPS-based televisions, set-top boxes and other products on the market based on Android.”
