Mobile, embedded applications taking market share from MPUs
Not surprisingly the fastest growing class of MPUs in the last five years has been mobile system-on-chip (SoC) designs for tablets and smartphones and MPUs used in embedded-processing applications, according to IC Insights.
In 2018 52 percent of MPU sales will be for CPUs in standard PCs, servers, and large computers. About 16 percent of MPU sales will be for embedded applications; 28 percent in mobile phones and 4 percent in tablets. Just over half of 2018 microprocessor sales are expected to be x86 MPUs sold by Intel and rival Advanced Micro Devices.
Mobile phone application processor shipments have been flat in 2016 and 2017, IC Insights states and the firm forecasts that the category will rise by 0.3 percent in 2018 to reach a high of 1.8 billion units for the year.
AMD is competing against Intel in 2018 with the roll out of highly parallel x86 MPUs built with the company’s new Zen microarchitecture.
