This is in spite of operators Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, BT and Nokia announcing that they will not go to the MWC in Barcelona – putting the event on life support.

Intel, NTT Docomo and Nvidia have also recently confirmed that they will not be attending this years event.

According to a recent statement from the GSMA, it is monitoring and assessing the potential impact of the Coronavirus on its MWC20 events held annually in Barcelona, Shanghai and Los Angeles and as well as the Mobile 360 Series of regional conferences.

Even with strict procedures in place, companies are doubting the effectiveness of thee measures given that China has quarantined a population about the size of the UK to bring the epidemic to a halt. Another issue is all the flights from around the globe that will be coming to Barcelona during the event.

In 2019, Mobile World Congress hit a new record with around 109,000 visitors, from 198 countries, of which 7,900 were executive directors.

The GSMA council consists of 26 representatives comprising telecommunications operators such as Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Orange, AT&T, Verizon, América Móvil, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.
