Modern manufacturing techniques are enabled by automation; the use of machines to carry out repetitive or mundane tasks with great accuracy. At the heart of manufacturing today is a sector that is both complex and expanding, industrial control. It is a sector that is dominated by electric motors, but their use extends beyond this domain, incorporating HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) and increasingly Home Automation (including our labour-saving devices such as washing machines, dryers and dishwashers). In fact, it is estimated that electric motors consume well over 50% of all electricity generated.
