Murata develops transformerless power chip for 65W AC-DC converters

Murata has co-developed the two chip MxC300 to use in 65W transformerless AC-DC designs. Using switching capacitors for power conversion, and by transferring power across a capacitive isolation barrier, the chipset can provide power density improvements of up to 20 times over traditional transformer-based architectures with average efficiencies of greater than 94 percent. It also enables the management of no-load conditions to meet or exceed a Zero Power requirement of under 5mW.

Murata has its own capacitor-based technology through pSemi, previously Peregrine Semiconductor. This led to a ‘power supply in package (PSiP)’ module eaerlier this year based on a charge-pump, switched-capacitor architecture that offloads most of the power conversion from the inductor to capacitors in the charge pump. This enables a smaller embedded package.
