My battery is bigger than yours
Siemens Smart Infrastructure has signed a letter of intent to fund and build a 100MW battery storage plant in Wunsiedel, Germany, that would be one of the largest in Europe.
At the same time a 100MW battery storage plant has opened in Wiltshire, UK, with a plan to grow to 150MW, and a 100MW battery plant is planned for Chester, ULK
The Siemens deal with Zukunftsenergie Nordostbayern (ZENOB) will use the battery management system from joint venture Fluence and has a storage capacity of 200MWh compared to 100MWh for the Minety plant in the UK.
Siemens will handle project management, including a technical implementation concept, as well as the construction of a medium-voltage switchgear system and connection to the high-voltage grid alongside development of a ‘financing concept’.

“Electricity storage facilities are an important building block for shaping the future of energy,” said Marco Krasser, Managing Director of SWW Wunsiedel, one of the partners in Zukunftsenergie Nordostbayern. “They can help stabilize the grid and make better use of energy generated from renewable sources. They draw surplus power from the grid and feed it back when electricity demand is higher. Smart storage technology will increase the local and national supply of green power. That is why we are gradually expanding the capacity.”
“This also benefits the upstream grid operator because it gives them more flexibility to compensate for voltage fluctuations, which are increasingly common because of the expansion of renewable energy generation,” said Bernd Koch, Head of Technology Performance Services at Siemens Smart Infrastructure Germany.
The Minety Battery Energy Storage Project was developed by Wiltshire-based Luminous Energy and sold to the China Huaneng group which built the plant and will operate it. This uses LiFePO/ ternary lithium battery technology, rather than the lithium ion favoured by Fluence for the Siemens plant, ad main equipment was manufactured and integrated by Chinese companies, more than 80 percent of equipment was made in China.
London-based Zeonobe is planning a 100MW battery plant near Chester, UK, with a capacity of 107MW that is scheduled to start operation in April 2022.
A 100MW battery plant has started up in Offaly in Ireland, with another similar sized Irish plant planned for Shannonbridge.
This compares to 250MWh for the cryobattery plant being built in the UK by Highview Power that uses liquid air to store energy.
