New BMW flagship model: A mini step closer to automated driving
BMW’s 7 series is already equipped with what the Bavarian carmaker calls Traffic Jam Assistant – a driving assistant that drives the vehicle in semi-autonomous mode during traffic jams on highways. This includes longitudinal and lateral control functions such as automated stop and go functions as well as lane changing. While this function hitherto was available only for multi-lane highways, the new M760Li xDrive’s Traffic Jam Assistant is able to perform its manoeuvres on any kind of roads.
Beyond this, the new top model will be fitted with a rather extensive package of innovative driver assistance systems including lane keeping with active side control collision protection, rear collision prevention and crossing traffic warning functions.
The integral active steering includes a more direct front axle steering plus rear axle steering: Depending on the traffic situation and speed, the rear wheels are turned in either the opposing or the same direction as the front wheels when steering. According to the carmaker, this system increases both manoeuvrability in urban traffic as well as agility and directional stability during high-paced driving.
In the cockpit, the new generation Surround View system now also includes a 3D View and Panorama View option in the control display. And the ConnectedDrive online service now has the On-Street Parking Information intelligent search function – which helps drivers to locate a free parking space in cities more quickly – and other services.
