Aart de Geus, the founder and long term CEO of EDA firm Synopsys is to step down at the end of the year.

The Board of Directors of Synopsys has appointed Sassine Ghazi as president and Chief Executive Officer effective on Jan. 1, 2024. At that time, de Geus will move from chair and CEO to Executive Chair. Ghazi, currently the president and COO, also joined the Synopsys Board of Directors this week.

“Following a systematic, multi-year succession planning process and speaking for the entire board,” added Roy Vallee, Lead Independent Director of Synopsys’ board, “we are delighted to promote Sassine to become our next president and CEO and thank Aart for the exemplary transition.”

Ghazi is currently president and COO, driving strategy for all business units, sales and marketing at Synopsys. Prior to joining Synopsys 25 years ago he was a design engineer at Intel.

“Regarding my own path forward, aside from first and foremost supporting Sassine, my focus will be to champion our unique culture and technical innovation both in and outside the company. In all cases, my support of Sassine will be seamless and encouraging as he brings fresh, ambitious, and exciting new leadership to our company,” said de Geus, who is now 69 and founded the company in 1986. It now has around 20,000 employees and revenue over the last twelve months of approximately $5.5bn.

“I know Sassine really well. He has been at Synopsys for 25 years. He started as an application engineer and then grew into a sales role. Sassine and I first worked closely together 17 years ago, when we established a strategic relationship with a high-impact customer,” he said.

“In the last three years, we worked closely together to profoundly evolve and scale the company. This all happened, while around us, the shadows of Covid, supply chain shortages, global stress between world leaders, and unprecedented climate impact literally coloured the sky dark red. But it was also a time where new architectures and multi-die constructs opened up another 1,000x silicon exponential already in demand by awesome advances in AI, electrification, and autonomous driving needs, and all further impacting our field from every vertical market,” he added.
