In the filing, the smart wearable is designated as the Model SM-R600. The name “Samsung Gear Sport” is shown on an included diagram of the device.

The Samsung FCC filing suggests that the release of the new device could be near. Speculation is that it could be announced either at a previously scheduled Samsung Unpacked event in New York next week, or in conjunction with the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, which opens early next month.

The filing includes test reports of the device, which reveal that it supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Speculation is that it may run on the Tizen OS – and not Android – given its apparent “Gear” branding.

While it is not clear if the device is a dedicated fitness tracker or sports-focused smartwatch, the latter makes sense given Apple’s recent move to refocus its smartwatches on fitness tracking. Samsung itself revealed in a survey earlier this month to its SmartLab Plus online community that it was working on a device that would combine “the best bits” from its Gear S3 smartwatches and Gear Fit 2 activity tracker.
