New Schaeffler factory is entirely dedicated to e-mobility
The opening of the plant in Hungary is an important milestone for Schaeffler on its way to the goal of decarbonisation: the company intends to produce CO2 neutrally by 2030 – worldwide.
The production of innovative components and systems for electric vehicles such as e-motors or hybrid transmissions will be carried out with an initial headcount of 150 and on an area of around 15,000 square metres. Szombathely II has a high degree of automation, the halls are modular and digitalised throughout. Sensitive production processes for assemblies such as stators, rotors and the integration of magnets for synchronous and asynchronous machines require a high degree of purity.

Automated production lines and the extensive use of robots guarantee these standards. By 2023, the company wants to increase annual capacity at the site to 800,000 products in multi-shift operation. Between 2026 and 2029, an annual target of 1.8 million manufactured products for premium partners in the automotive industry is to be achieved. From 2022 onwards, the Schaeffler Group expects an annual order intake of €2-3 billion for the electromobility division.
With Szombathely II, construction of which began in 2020, the Schaeffler Group is already building its second plant in western Hungary. It will start production around three kilometres away from the first factory, which has been in operation since 1996. The plant will draw its electricity from photovoltaic systems and another system for harnessing solar energy on the factory roof. Schaeffler aims to save up to 4,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually in this way. Heat pumps for heat recovery, intelligent heating and cooling management, and energy-saving LED lighting with intelligent control are designed to guarantee high energy efficiency.
