New transparent surfaces allow gesture recognition without visible optical systems
The transparent surfaces with integrated, invisible microstructured optics allow a wide variety of applications. For example, the innovation allows gesture recognition or eye tracking without visible optical systems. The use in a Smart Home is also planned. The innovative technology enables the glass panes in windows to perform monitoring tasks inside and outside the house. They can also filter sunlight, measure temperatures and display information.
“It is possible to equip glass surfaces of any size with versatile functions,” explains Alexandre Gatto from Zeiss’ Microstructured Optics business unit. “The smart multifunctional glass will be able to illuminate, detect, filter and project simultaneously in the future”.
The company sees potential applications in numerous environments and markets, including augmented reality and the automotive industry.
The optics company will present its innovation at the SPIE Photonics West trade show, which will take place from February 5 to 7, 2019 in San Francisco, USA.
