China-owned semiconductor company Nexperia BV (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) has reported that hackers gained unauthorized access to its computer systems in March 2024.

According to local news reports Nexperia sensitive information related to customers such as Apple and Huawei may have been stolen and a ransom demanded.

Nexperia said the incident has been reported to the ‘Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens’ (Dutch Data Protection Authority) and the police and that it is investigating the breach of its security with cybersecurity expert FoxIT.

The company has not discussed its policy on paying ransom

Hackers reportedly posted dozens of confidential documents on the ‘dark web’ and compromised information includes trade secrets, chip designs and data related to major customers such as Apple, Huawei and SpaceX.

“We promptly took action and disconnected the affected systems from the internet to contain the incident and implemented extensive mitigation. We also launched an investigation with the support of third-party experts to determine the nature and scope of the incident and took strong measures to terminate the unauthorized access,” the company said in a statement.

The company did not discussed its policy on paying ransom to hackers.

Nexperia, previously the standard products division of NXP, makes a broad range of power and discrete logic transistors at factories in Hamburg and Manchester.

The company is now a subsidiary of the partially state-owned Chinese company Wingtech Technology. It was recently compelled to sell a wafer fab in Newport, Wales, to Vishay Intertechnology of the US under UK national security legislation.
