Nexperia proposes to cut 100 jobs at its controversial wafer fab in Newport after there has been little activity over its compelled sale of the plant.

The staff association at Nexperia Newport there claims to represent about 580 employees at the site where Nexperia makes power semiconductors and which had conducted compound semiconductor research.

Chinese owned Nexperia BV (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) was told by the UK government in November 2022 that it must sell at least 86 percent of the 200mm wafer fab, on the grounds of national security. Early in 2023 Nexperia said it would seek a judicial review with the High Court (see Nexperia lawyers up for fight over Newport Wafer Fab).

Nexperia, formerly part of NXP Semiconductors, became part of Shanghai-based Wingtech in December 2019.

Delays have consequences

Newport Wafer Fab Ltd. was the UK’s largest semiconductor wafer fab being used as the focus for a compound semiconductor research cluster in South Wales. It tried to gain revenue by acting as a foundry, but got into financial difficulties before being acquired by Nexperia in July 2021.

Now Nexperia plans to restructure the site and return the wafer fab to employment levels to those before the takeover, according to reports. “This is a business decision that has not been taken lightly but is one that we are taking to protect the future viability of the site,” reports quoted Nexperia saying in a statement.

One report quoted a Nexperia spokesperson saying: “The judicial review process is disappointingly slow, for reasons beyond Nexperia’s control. Continuing to explore a potential sale of the site, as directed by the government, is also likely to take many months.”

On the X social media platform Welsh Economy Minister Vaughan Gething said the Welsh government had warned that delays and indecision from the Westminster government over the potential sale of the wafer fab in Newport would have consequences.
