Nio to use and produce Mobileye’s autonomous driving technology
Through the collaboration, Nio plans to utilize Mobileye’s vision-based technology to develop highly automated and autonomous vehicles. As part of the planned cooperation, Nio will engineer and manufacture a self-driving system designed by Mobileye, building on Mobileye’s level-4 (L4) AV kit. According to Nio, this self-driving system will be the first of its kind, targeting consumer autonomy, engineered for automotive qualification standards, quality, cost, and scale.
Nio said it plans to mass-produce the system for Mobileye and also integrate the technology into its electric vehicle lines for consumer markets and for Mobileye’s driverless ride-hailing services. This variant will target initial release in China, with plans to subsequently expand into other global markets.
Despite a rather weak IPO, Nio has received high rankings for its innovative technology. For instance, in the prestigious Innovation Ranking of the Center of Automotive Management, Nio’s innovation strength was rated higher than that of several European and Japanese carmakers. The Shanghai-based company that runs a design center in Munich (Germany), has developed NOMI, an AI-based driver assistance system that recognizes the preferences of the vehicle occupants and then automatically provide the correct or expected information during the journey. NOMI’s production start is planned for 2020. In addition, Nio is planning to introduce a concept to establish an infrastructure for the exchange of traction batteries. The company has already launched production of three series vehicles, all of them electrically-driven, high-end SUVs.
