Nissan to ship driverless cars in 2027

With all of the uncertainty on the future of Nissan with the failed merger with Honda and a massive restructuring, the company has aggressive plans to ship commercial driverless cars in the next two years.
The company plans to launch vehicles capable of ‘door-to-door autonomous driving’ by 2027. This would be SAE Level 5 with autonomous driving on urban roads rather than Level 4 for motorways and main roads. No vehicle has been approved to L4 or L5 so far.
This follows on from plans for ‘robotaxi’ driverless mobility services in Japan to be commercialization by that time announced last year.
Nissan has been deeply involved in driverless car trials in Japan and the UK, and has already shown a prototype driverless vehicle that is being tested this year.
Nissan is still working with Honda on intelligent systems, and Honda is also planning to ship a commercial driverless car in 2026.
