Nokia asks Tampere University to design 5G chips
Nokia said the move is part of its commitment to developing its ReefShark chipset portfolio for 5G cellular communications.
The center is due to open in November and is expected to produce a chip design each year while Nokia contributes to module specifications and physical implementation. Nokia will also explore areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and security hardware development as well as open source hardware based SoCs.
Jyrki Vuorinen, Dean of a faculty responsible for information technology and communication sciences at Tampere University, said: “We have recruited a professor of practice and started the recruitment process of two international professorships.”
Nokia did not indicate how many engineers would be employed at the center, or much funding is being provided.
Nokia has had a partnership with Tampere University since its ‘Nokia Innovation Center’ was co-located with the university in the 2000s.
