NTi improves intelligibility measurements
Under real-world conditions, for example in a noisy railway station, it frequently renders impossible to measure the intelligibility of announcements. The playback of test signals on the loudspeakers used for the announcements frequently irritates the peasants. In addition, an exact measurement requires constant ambient noise – a condition that is normally not met at populated places. For these reasons, such measurements usually are performed at night time while the real ambient sounds of the respective place are recorded at normal times – at daytime, when the place is crowded and the noise is high. The XL2 acoustic analyser blends these two pre-recorded measurement profiles and displays the language intelligibility directly on its screen. As an additional option, the device generates a report in Microsoft Excel format that can be used to calculate intelligibility under real ambient conditions on a PC.
All XL2 measurement results can be imported into the report to generate a detailed documentation. In addition, the spreadsheet computes the intelligibility that can be expected at a real emergency announcement. In many projects, a single octave band spectrum of the characteristic ambient noise is used to correct the intelligibility at multiple measurement positions. The report generated by the XL2 acoustic analyser facilitates the selection of a noise spectrum for all measurement positions, reducing the time needed for the analysis and simplifies the documentation.
