Nvidia, AMD are winners in fabless ranking
The market analyst said that work-from-home and distance education during the Covid-19 pandemic sales of notebook computers, networking and data center products spiked.
Nvidia registered the highest year-on-year growth at 52.2 percent followed by AMD at 45.0 percent. Qualcomm did well with 33.7 percent growth and overtook Broadcom, which only managed 2.9 percent growth.
Qualcomm was bolstered by Apple’s decision to once again adopt its modems and US sanctions against Huawei, which drove other smartphone makers to increase output. Nvidia’s situation was improved by the acquisition of Mellanox.
Three Taiwanese companies also performed well. MediaTek’s revenue underwent a 37.3 percent YoY increase in 2020. Novatek’s revenue grew by 30.1 percent YoY, as the US-China trade war and the stay-at-home economy brought about by the pandemic resulted in strong sales of its driver ICs and TV SoCs. Finally, Realtek benefitted from the high demand for its various offerings, most notably networking products and notebooks, although sales of its audio products and Bluetooth chips were also respectable. Realtek’s revenue increased by 34.1 percent YoY.
The shortage of foundry capacity brought about by surging demand is likely to persist in 2021 and this will serve to drive up chip prices and the size of the fabless chip market in 2021, TrendForce said.
