Nvidia, AMD set to challenge Intel with Arm-based PC processors

Both Nvidia Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. are developing Arm-based processors for use in Windows personal computers that could appear in 2025, according to a Reuters report.
The two companies share prices rose by a few percent each while the price of Intel shares fell on the news. Nvidia and AMD are following in the footsteps of Qualcomm in challenging Intel, the developer of the x86 architecture which has held a dominant position in supplying Windows PCs with processors.
Nvidia has risen to prominence on the sale of GPU chips for AI into datacenters (see Nvidia set to become top chip company this year).
AMD has been Intel’s rival in PC processors ever since it was able to establish its legal right to manufacture x86 processors.
According to reports Microsoft’s Windows operating system, that traditionally has used the x86 processor, has lost market share in personal computing to Apple over the last three years since Apple replaced the x86 with its own design of Arm-based processor in its MacBook personal computers.
Microsoft may therefore wish to encourage a market in rival Arm-based processors to power laptop computers.
Qualcomm acquired Nuvia Corp., a startup founded by former Apple engineers, for its attempted entry into the processor market. However, in doing so it fell out with architectural licensee Arm Ltd. (ARM sues Qualcomm over Nuvia chip designs).
Nvidia and AMD appear to closer to Arm with Nvidia having made a bid to buy Arm from parent SoftBank Group that was thwarted by a failure to achieve regulatory approval.
