Nvidia comes under European anti-competitive scrutiny

The European Union and the French government are separately investigating potential anticompetitive behaviour by Nvidia in the supply of artificial intelligence technology, according to reports.

The European Union is informally gathering opinions about potential exploitative conduct across the GPU sector where Nvidia is the dominant supplier, according to Bloomberg. It is doing this to see if there is a need for the EU to regulate the market in the future.

This is a preliminary investigation and may not lead to a formal inquiry or a case being brought against any company.

At the same time the French antitrust regulator, the Autorité de la concurrence, has said it has conducted a dawn raid on the premises of a company suspected of anticompetitive practices in the graphics cards sector.

The raid is part of a broader investigation into cloud computing by the Autorité de la concurrence, which was the subject of an opinion on competition in its sector published on 29th June 2023. The Autorité de la concurrence did not name the graphics card company. However, reports have linked the raid to Nvidia.

If the EU launches any antitrust investigation, companies accused of violating the law may be ordered to make changes in management policy and may be fined up to 10 percent of global annual revenue.
