NXP chip to power mobile payments in Garmin wearables
By using its SE technology and Loader Service provisioning solution, says NXP, Garmin can easily and quickly deploy Garmin Pay in their products without compromising security. The Loader Service solution simplifies the development and integration of payment functionality while maintaining significantly lower setup and maintenance costs, the company says.
Users simply add their card information to the Garmin Pay wallet, powered by Fit Pay, which then syncs with their virtual wallet in their watch. As a result, says NXP, Garmin users benefit from a secure and convenient payment experience while on the go.
“NXP is recognized as the preferred provider in the payment ecosystem, known for our ability to deliver trusted security, authentication, and end-to-end NFC solutions into many of the world’s most high-profile applications,” says Rafael Sotomayor, senior vice president and general manager of secure transactions and identifications at NXP. “NXP’s PN80T SE and NFC solution enable Garmin and others to quickly bring to market secure and convenient payment experiences.”
Garmin’s Vívoactive 3 smartwatch features built-in GPS and comes with over 15 preloaded sports apps and fitness and wellness monitoring tools like fitness age and all-day stress tracking. The Forerunner 645 Music running watch features integrated music, performance monitoring tools, and advanced running dynamics to help athletes get the data they need.
The Garmin Pay contactless payment solution supports Mastercard and Visa debit and credit cards from an expanding portfolio of issuing banks. By adding supported cards to their Garmin Pay wallet, users can experience the same rewards and benefits of the physical cards while having them conveniently on their wrist.
“In collaborating with NXP, we can better provide the ultimate on-the-go lifestyle to our customers,” says Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “This technology, featured on the Vívoactive 3 and Forerunner 645 Music, enables customers to leave their cash and credit cards at home and securely make purchases where NFC payments are accepted.”
