
NXP spends to ‘reshore’ manufacturing of security chips to US
The money will be spent on NXP facilities in Austin and Chandler and enable security chips for government applications to made in the US and includes the SmartMX microcontroller family. The facilities are a legacy of NXP’s acquisition of Freescale in 2015.
NXP technology is used within government-issued ID documents in more than 120 countries, and by 95 countries worldwide to secure electronic passport programs.
NXP R&D manufacturing facilities in San Jose, Austin and Chandler have also undergone a thorough security cite certification process to produce Common Criteria EAL6+ SmartMX microcontroller family products.
There are over 6 billion SmartMX microcontrollers deployed and they are used for over one-third of chip-based payment cards in circulation and for electronic documents such as ePassports, citizen cards, national ID cards, driving licenses, social security cards and health cards.
