OKdo to sell new BBC micro:bit computer
OKdo will use its distribution network to extend the reach of the BBC micro:bit, supporting the Foundation’s ambition to provide the opportunity for every child in the world to learn digital creativity and computing skills.
Okdo is an Electrocomponents company and the sister company of RS components.
Gareth Stockdale, CEO of the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, explained: “We launched the micro:bit to help children shape the world around them by using computational thinking and technology to unlock their creative potential and enhance their life choices in the 21st century. OKdo and Electrocomponents have the capability to help us reach new markets, inspire new generations and support our objectives for the Micro:bit Educational Foundation.”
The latest version of the pocket-sized BBC micro:bit features a built-in loudspeaker and microphone to provide enhanced audio and voice capabilities. The new board also has a capacitive touch sensor and power save button. These new features will allow children to expand their creative skills while continuing to benefit from all the features and functions of the original micro:bit. The micro:bit hardware can now run machine learning systems, and the Foundation intends to provide new resources to support this in the short term. Machine learning will extend the type of learning opportunities possible from the compact computer.
The new version of the micro:bit will be available from mid-November and can be purchased through OKdo as well as through RS Components globally and Allied Electronics in North America.
