OLED displays double as loudspeakers
LG Display calls it Crystal Sound OLED (CSO) technology, making it clear that because the OLEDs do not require a backlight and the light emitting films can be made flexible, they can also withstand the vibration input from integrated actuators (most probably carefully located and synchronized piezoelectric transducers).
The CSO panel is said to produce a more immerse sound compared to ones with external speakers and the company plans to commercialize the technology for TVs in 2017.
Sony announced unveiled its “Acoustic Surface” technology with the launch of its A1E Series OLED TV. The TV emits sound directly through its vibrating screen, focusing mainly on the high-pitched sounds while the low-pitched sounds are output from a speaker embedded in the display support.
The Japanese company highlighted that it would be difficult to apply the Acoustic Surface technology to LCD displays since the vibrations can affect image quality on LCD-based displays.
